Back to School Chain

Children need “previewing;” they need notice before a change is made. They don’t like to stop in the middle of their play to eat lunch or take a nap. Would you like to stop doing something fun for something less interesting that you are told you must do? This is not to say they can’t learn to be flexible in a routine. I am talking about helping a child through a transition, whether it’s a large transition like starting school, or a small transition like stopping play to take a nap.

This project is a great way to get your child excited and interested in starting or going back to school! Start your school year with Playgarden Online by making this fun craft together.

Materials

  • Construction paper in your school’s colors (Orange & Green for Playgarden!)
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Foam numbers, or a marker to write your numbers down

How To

  • Take your orange and green (or whatever colors you use) construction paper and cut it in fours vertically.
  • Tape each link together to form a chain. I started with Day 10, but you can start with whatever day feels most comfortable for your family. I would not suggest going higher than Day 12; otherwise, your child may become more anxious with anticipation.
  • Using self-adhesive foam letters—I found mine at the Dollar Tree—have your little one help you peel the stickers and place them on the chain. Make sure to have number 10 at the bottom of your chain.
  • You can also create a simple sign above your chain that says “Countdown to School!"
  • Cut off one link each day leading up to your first day of school!
