How To Succeed with Preschool Online Learning (Part 1)
More and more parents are turning to preschool online learning to help their young ones learn and grow! Whether you’re concerned about safety at school, you can’t find the right preschool near you, or you prefer to homeschool with your family all in one place, either way, remote learning can be an excellent way to enhance their education.
However, distance learning carries its own challenges. For a child to succeed, they need parents who can overcome those challenges and create the best possible home environment for learning.
In the next two articles, we’ll be looking in-depth at what you can do to ensure your child’s online pre-K learning is a success!
How To Make The Most Of Preschool Online Learning
1. Familiarize yourself with the technology
If you’re already keeping up with the latest technology, that’s great! However, if not, it would be very good to familiarize yourself with the technology involved, particularly videoconferencing. You’ll need a device with a camera – such as a tablet, laptop, or computer with a webcam. These should be in working order.
Also, software will be involved. This is typically a program such as Skype, Google meet or Zoom, although each online preschool may have different software requirements. Try out the software beforehand, so you won’t have any technical problems when it’s time for school to start.
2. Have all the necessary equipment ready to go
At a bare minimum, your child will need:
- A computing device with a camera
- A working power source (don’t rely on batteries)
- Headphones
- A desk and chair to work at
In addition, we strongly recommend carving out a place in your home which is dedicated to learning. Ideally, this is a room but could also simply be a corner of a shared room, if space is limited. Either way, having a dedicated learning space will help your child remain focused.
3. Learn and reinforce proper online behavior
Just as a child is never too young to start learning etiquette, they’re also never too young to learn netiquette. Reinforce the idea that the people on the screen are real people just like them. This may be confusing to younger children accustomed to watching pre-made videos.
Also, always be aware of online privacy and protection. We recommend leaving the door open whenever your child is taking online classes, even if you’re leaving them alone, so you can still monitor their online safety.
