Helping Your Child Reduce Online Learning Anxiety (Part 2)
In our last blog installment, we discussed why online learning anxiety can be such a problem for some online preschool students and how parents can help reduce their child’s anxiousness. Playgarden Prep talked about keeping calm in the face of issues, solving problems with your child as a team, and being proactive about potential difficulties they may face.
Here we offer some additional advice to help nip online learning anxiety in the bud!
Understand that Webcams Cause Anxiety
One of the foremost factors that cause online learning anxiety is being on a webcam, so it’s important to be understanding with your child and discuss their anxieties with them. It could be something as simple as seeing themselves on the computer screen, or the background of the room where the computer is set up for them to attend online preschool. If it’s a serious issue, ask the teachers if your child can attend class without the webcam on if it’s not a requirement.
Eliminate Toxic Positivity
No one is positive one hundred percent of the time, and false positivity can often provide the wrong impression, especially to younger children. Also referred to as “toxic positivity,” this type of attitude doesn’t allow children to express frustration or anger, both feelings they have the right to feel when encountering challenging issues. You can help them work through such emotions in a positive manner by addressing them and helping your child understand why they feel the way they do.
Do Your Best & Move Forward After Addressing Mistakes
When you or your child make a mistake regarding their online learning experience, once you’ve addressed the issue, it’s important to move forward and close the book on it. Tell your child that what is most important is that they continue doing their best, and that you’ll do the same to help them!
