Autism Awareness In April

Autism Awareness In April - Playgarden Online
BY Miss Charlotte April 04, 2022

Autism Awareness Month is from April 1st – April 30th. One in every 54 children is diagnosed with Autism, which is a developmental condition that affects the way individuals might communicate, progress mentally, and interact with others. This month serves as a way to raise awareness for autism, and show that it is not something to be changed, but rather, celebrated!

Autism Awareness Month was first started in 1970 by the Autism Society. The Autism Society states their vision as “a world in which individuals and families living with autism are able to maximize their quality of life, are treated with the highest level of dignity, and live in a society in which their talents and skills are appreciated and valued”.

A great way to support the Autistic community during this month is by giving to charity. Choosing a charity can be tricky, but it is always good to look into organizations that are looking to support awareness. There are a variety of local and national organizations that are looking to expand education about autism and spread awareness for the rights of people with this condition. This article has an extensive list of 20 organizations that are excellent to donate to.

When talking to children about autism, books are a great way to introduce them to the topic and teach them that autism isn’t scary. This list has some excellent books to teach children what it’s like living with autism.

How can you support a child with autism?

Just like with any child, providing a sense of routine is excellent for children with autism. Many autistic individuals enjoy consistency, as it provides a sense of safety for them.

Because many autistic individuals have trouble communicating using words, nonverbal cues can also make them feel more heard and seen.

Awareness of sensory issues is also important, as some people have aversions to particular tastes, smells and textures.

Autistic individuals can sometimes form specific interests. By supporting and championing these interests, you are showing that you are excited about your child succeeding and finding something that brings them joy!

Certain EdTech programs have also been known to help children on the spectrum.

Autism is a disorder that shouldn’t be feared. Many people lead rich and fulfilling lives while on the spectrum, such as actor Anthony Hopkins, singer Susan Boyle, and poet Emily Dickinson to name a few! This month, it is important to learn more about Autism, and show support for those living with it.
