Music is not only enjoyable for your child, but also, can help them in their education! Music can engage both the body and the mind when it comes to activities like singing and dancing. A study in 2016 done at the University of Southern California’s Brain and Creativity Institute found that music accelerated early childhood development, increasing communication skills and language acquisition.

Music is a crucial part of any good online Montessori preschool program. Here are some music activities you can provide your child with to ensure maximum success and fun!

5 music activities to try with your child

  1. Freeze Dance
Freeze dance is a classic for a reason! Put on your child’s favorite song, or find a specific freeze dance song online for a simple yet effective online Montessori Preschool activity. Not only is this fun, but it will get your child up on their feet and moving.
  2. Shaker games
Shakers are a simple instrument that can be utilized in many engaging ways! You can buy shakers, or make them yourself at home as a DIY project.
Shakers are a great item to incorporate into games. Playing freeze dance with shakers is a fun addition to a simple game. Shakers can also help your child learn to keep rhythm while adding some flare to regular songs like ABC’s and Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.
  3. Puppet shows
Getting a few puppets can add an exciting visual element to music time during your child’s online Montessori preschool program. Using puppets during songs like Old MacDonald can give your child an opportunity to identify what animal they are singing about while also learning and memorizing different sounds and actions.
  4. Do a little dance!
The Do A Little Dance song is an easy and fun way to engage your child’s mind by having them consider what they are wearing and making a decision to sing about it! The song is simple and goes:
I have a friend who’s wearing (whatever your child says!)
    I have a friend who’s wearing ____
    I have a friend who’s wearing ____
And their name is (child’s name)
    (name) do a little dance!
    (name) do a little dance!
    (name) do a little dance!
Do a little dance and sit back down!
This can be done with one child or a group!
  5. Use instruments
Using instruments is an excellent way to add to your child’s learning during their online Montessori preschool day. Children can use instruments like drums, whistles, and xylophones to learn about different sounds and songs that can be played, while also getting the addition of a fun sensory experience!
