Celebrating Father’s Day: Activities To Do Together

Celebrating Father’s Day: Activities To Do Together - Playgarden Online

Did you know the creation of Father’s Day was inspired by Mother’s Day? In 1909, Sonora Smart Dodd was listening to a Mother’s Day speech, remembering her mother who passed away during childbirth. Dodd’s father raised her and her five other siblings by himself. The following year, with Dodd’s lobbying, the first Father’s Day was celebrated; and in 1972, Father’s Day became a nationally recognized holiday!

Like mothers, fathers are people we look to for guidance, care, and love. Father-figures have so many names: dad, papa, uncle, grandpa, teacher, and coach are just a few. They remind us how capable we are, how strong we are, and how loved we are. Father’s day is for celebrating those inspirational people in our lives, and to teach our little ones how important it is to tell those people how grateful we are for them.

Here are some suggestions for preschool activities to celebrate Father’s Day with your family:

Sunday in the Park

If the weather permits, spend the day, or part of the day, doing preschool activities out in the park. You can pack a picnic, bring some bubbles and a ball to kick around. Enjoy a nature walk and become explorers in your neighborhood park. Tip: Little ones love being in on surprises. For your picnic, have your little one help pack some of Dad’s favorite snacks as a surprise for Dad!

Cook Dinner Together

Especially if Dad loves to cook, working with your little one in the kitchen is one of the best ways to bond. Share a favorite recipe or a recipe that has been passed down through your family. An added bonus: time spent in the kitchen as a preschool activity can boost a child’s curiosity to try new foods.

Movie Night

Make a comfy fort in the living room, get some of Dad’s favorite movie snacks, and cozy up with a movie night in. Find out Dad’s favorite movie from when he was little, and share a piece of Dad’s childhood with the family.

Try Something New!

Is there a place that both your little one and Dad have never been before? Experiencing new places together is the thing core memories are made of! Maybe it’s a science museum or aquarium you’ve never been to, or even a small town or zoo. This preschool activity really can be anything!

However you decide to celebrate, remind your little ones how important it is to celebrate someone that means so much to them.

To all the fathers, father-figures, and parents alike: Happy Father’s Day!
