How to Enjoy Recess During Online Preschool – Part 1 Fun and Games - Playgarden Online
BY Miss Charlotte March 24, 2022

An online preschool can bring almost all the benefits of an in-person preschool while being more cost effective and providing more opportunities to interact and engage with your child’s learning.  However, there is one thing it tends to lack a designated time and space for: recess.

For developing minds, recess is an important part of the learning process. Requiring your little one’s mind to stay engaged for multiple hours at a time can prove difficult, and can lead to them feeling tired and cranky more easily. Recess is necessary to give them some downtime within their schedule, and also lets them work off any accumulated energy that’s been built up while sitting still.

Recess can be an experience that can be tailored to the needs of each child. Some children may want quiet time during recess, while  others want to run around.  By working recess into your child’s online preschool schedule, you’ll help them succeed by allowing them to have agency to choose how they want to use their time. Plus, you can have fun playing with them while they choose!

If you’re looking for ideas, we’ve got plenty – enough for two articles!

How to Enjoy Recess During Online Preschool – Part 1 – Fun & Games

Recess is the perfect time for playtime in the middle of school time, and can allow you to get in some quality time with your child while you do it.  For example…

1 – Tag!

The classics are still the best.  Every child loves playing tag, even if it’s just them and their grown ups. Of course, the more the merrier.  Tag is great for burning off energy since there’s plenty of running around involved.

2 – Hide-and-Seek

If the grown ups are too tired to do much running, hide-and-seek is an equally engaging alternative.  You can make the seeking process as fast or as slow as you’d like, making this a game that can be easily tailored for all parties!

3 – Coloring books

No matter the age, coloring books have something to offer for everyone. It’s a calming activity for you while helping your child develop their hand-eye coordination.  Plus, they might start to discover their artistic skills while coloring!

4 – Keep It Up

If you have an inflatable or squishy ball, Keep It Up is a fun way to get your little ones jumping and moving, all while improving their coordination.  There is one main rule: don’t let the ball touch the ground.

5 – The Floor Is Lava

If you have cushions, blankets, or chairs you can stand on, then this is a great game to play! Little ones and their grown ups will be tasked to hop from one safe spot to the other, trying not to touch the floor or carpet. This game encourages creative thinking and problem-solving.  If you’re playing with multiple people, it can also become an opportunity for bonus teamwork learning.
