Making An Online Montessori Preschool More Comfortable for Your Kids
More and more parents are opting to skip in-person preschool and are choosing an online Montessori preschool instead. Virtual preschool can bring your child all the same benefits as a regular school, but in a safe, familiar environment where you can watch over their education more closely.
However, online schooling can be difficult for little ones. Not only are they being asked to adjust to a brand new routine, but they are also beginning to engage with new lessons and forms of socialization they may be unfamiliar with. As a result, they may struggle to adjust to the process. As a Montessori parent, there are things you can do to make it easier — and help ensure they succeed!
Five Ways to Make Online Montessori Preschool More Accessible for Your Child
1 – Create a schedule and stick to it
One of the best things you can do for your little one’s virtual preschool success is to turn online schooling into a routine just like any other type of schooling. Try getting your child used to waking up at a certain time, and have a specific block of time during the day carved out for only online Montessori preschool classes. Having set times for lunch and other activities also can break up the day and make virtual preschool feel more incorporated as an enjoyable thing rather than something they have to “get through” all in one go. Once your child adapts, it’ll become routine for them.
2 – Always clear their workspace of any distractions
Designate a space in your home that’s specifically meant for virtual preschool classes and learning. Because of the nature of using a space within your home to work, it’s bound to get cluttered up with toys, books, and other distractions. Always clear these away before an online Montessori preschool session, so your little one will be encouraged to focus on the lesson.
If they need a favorite toy as a “study partner”, or just an object to get out any fidgeting that might occur, you can allow your little one to use this in moderation. Make sure to also keep an eye out to make sure this doesn’t become a distracting item.
3 – Get a comfortable chair and desk
Comfort matters, especially for toddlers. Being uncomfortable will most certainly lead to fidgeting and potentially getting up to leave their designated learning space. Because of this, it’s well worth investing in a genuinely comfy chair, as well as a desk/workstation they can sit at for the duration of their online Montessori preschool lessons without discomfort.
4 – Have snacks at the ready
Learning is hard work for little ones, and they’re going to get tired easily. If you find their attention wandering, or they get cranky, finding a spot in their virtual preschool routine to incorporate a short snack break could be very useful! A break for a healthy snack like fresh fruit, veggies, and/or crackers can be just the thing to pep them up again.
5 – Arrange for chats with friends before class
While attending virtual preschool, just like an in-person preschool, your little one will have the incredible opportunity of being able to socialize with others around their age in a shared environment. Once they’ve made some friends, make arrangements with the parents for them to jump onto a video chatting platform such as Zoom or Skype and chat for a few minutes before class. Incorporating these meetings into their before-class routine will also give them something to look forward to before jumping into their online Montessori preschool lessons for the day!
