4 Tips for Facilitating Online Learning for Preschoolers During the COVID-19 Pandemic - Playgarden Online

Keeping the attention of a preschooler is hard enough on its own, without the added complications of the global COVID-19 pandemic. Unfortunately this is the world we live in for now, so it’s important to adapt. Thankfully, many brick-and-mortar schools have successfully implemented online preschool platforms—Playgarden Prep included!

Here are some tips to help facilitate daily learning for your preschooler, while keeping them encouraged and engaged.

  1. Have a Routine
Routines help to keep adults grounded, organized, and focused, and they are even more important in the day-to-day life of your little one. Having routines gives them a sense of familiarity, and creates a comfortable structure for their daily activities. Plan a routine for your preschooler, and stick to it! To make things easier, you can try phasing in your new schedule; try planning simple activities such as waking up and getting dressed, in addition to learning time, meals, outside time, book readings, etc.

  2. Let them Know What to Expect
If you’re working from home and still have responsibilities, it’s important to communicate to your child that you may not always be available to play and learn with them. As a parent, it is your job to let them know what to expect! However, it is also vitally important that you give them your full attention throughout the day, even if you can only do so for 15 to 20 minutes at a time.

  3. Make Sure Their Emotional Needs Are Met
Another important factor of facilitating online preschool learning is making sure your preschooler’s emotional needs are met each day. If they’re anxious, they might have a hard time expressing it; watch out for the signs and be there for them when they need an adult’s help dealing with those not-so-fun feelings.

  4. Engage in Daily Learning
Last (but not least), there are a few things your child should be doing daily. Forming these habits early is your best bet for instilling an early love of learning! Make sure that your child is engaged while working on their sensory and imaginary play activities, and fine and gross motor skills. They also need daily social time to connect—with you, their other guardian(s), other family members, friends, etc. They’ll also need outside time if the weather allows for it, and some physical activity each day.
