5 Ways to Prevent Summer Learning Loss

5 Ways to Prevent Summer Learning Loss  - Playgarden Online

Summer is a great time for getting outdoors and exploring, but while adventuring, young children can often lose sight of what they learned in preschool the year before. Although it might seem tough to compete with summer learning loss, the team from our online Montessori preschool and kindergarten has some insight for you.

Here are five ways to prevent summer learning loss from Playgarden Prep

1. Work on Reading Comprehension

During the summer, working on reading comprehension is a great way to keep your preschooler or kindergarten student sharp. Using a reading comprehension book and setting aside a few minutes each day for your child to work through it can help them better understand what they’re reading.

2. Keeping Up with Math

Although your child might not particularly enjoy working on math problems during the summertime away from school, there are some inventive ways to keep up the learning process. For example, have them help you in the kitchen while cooking. You can have them measure ingredients and practice adding and subtracting, and other simple arithmetic problems.

3. Always Make Time for Learning

It’s easy for time to slip away on nice summer days, so be sure to schedule a regular learning time to keep some sort of structure in place. Even 15-30 minutes for learning or educational activities can make all the difference. This can include working on educational exercises or trips to the library or museums. It doesn’t all have to be bookwork.

4. Get Creative with Writing

The summer is a great time to have your child explore their creative side when it comes to writing. Even if they’re just learning, having them write and draw a story or book of their own creation not only helps them build their reading and writing skills, but also expand their mind and develop a love of self-discovery.

5. Focus on Learning Gaps

The summertime is a great time to cover some of the learning gaps your child may have. Are there some subjects that your preschooler or kindergartener isn’t as strong in as others? If so, there are a number of things you can do, such as work with educational computer games or create fun activities for other types of learning.
