How is this affecting children?

The pandemic has changed how we have led our lives for the past two years. While there is thankfully now more public understanding about ways to protect ourselves, our friends, and our loved ones, we are still in a post-pandemic world where the changes to our daily routines are still affecting us.

Children who are growing up during this time are being impacted by the pandemic during a time where they are most easily influenced. According to the CDC, “Trauma faced at this developmental stage may have long-term consequences across their lifespan.” While seemingly intense, this information is also good to know, as it allows for us to take note of ways we can help children adjust to the changes in the world during this time. By giving children tools to cope with the stress of a post-pandemic world, you can ensure their wellbeing.

What can we do to help support our children?

Children are incredibly observant, so it is important to help them understand what is going on in the world. If your child asks questions surrounding the pandemic, find a way to explain it to them in a way that is age-appropriate and helps them understand. It is okay if they are worried, and allowing room for them to express their emotions in a way that makes them feel heard can help them feel supported and cared for. Despite the worry, it is also helpful to remind them that they have a support system, and will be given the necessary care and resources to keep them safe.

Change may also be scary for them, as it is a big part of our current world as new information regarding Covid-19 comes out. However, reminding your child that change is not always negative can help them feel more comfortable as it arises. In some instances, change can be exciting! For example, we are finding new ways to connect with each other via the internet and video chatting technology such as Zoom.

Change can lead to creativity when it comes to celebrations, as many important life events are occurring in our post-pandemic world for children. Testing has become widely available, so asking your friends and family to test before attending gatherings can be a crucial step in making sure everyone in attendance can stay safe. If you or someone else you know are sick, finding an alternative way to celebrate such as creating a Zoom event can ensure that gatherings still happen while putting health and wellbeing at the forefront.

Education has also changed in our post-pandemic world, with things like online preschool becoming popularized. Online preschool programs allow children to connect with others around their age while also learning necessary skills to prepare them for their upcoming years in school, whether online or in person.

Enrolling your child in an online program is a great way to offer a form of structure in their daily life during uncertain times. Structure is a crucial element of wellbeing, and can be found through our programming here at Playgarden!
