Traveling With Toddlers

Picture this: you’re off from work for the week, your child is out of school, and you’re planning a family trip. Everything is packed and ready to go, but there’s a small delay: your toddler is being fussy and won’t settle down for the trip! What can you do?

Here are 5 tips to help make travel easier when you have a child traveling with you!

1 – Safety first!

Before doing anything else, make sure you have the correct accommodations! If you are going on a road trip, check to see if you have the proper equipment in the car, such as a booster or car seat. If you’re traveling via plane, children younger than 2 can technically ride in your lap. However, the safest accommodation is buckled into a seat with an infant vest.

2 – Disconnect to connect 

It is tempting to simply provide your child with an Ipad or electronic device to occupy them during travel time. While a movie, show or video can be a fun treat during a trip, this can also be a great time to connect with your little one with personal time! Try finding a road trip game like “I Spy”, or playing an audiobook that you can both listen to and enjoy. 

3 – Snacks 

Your little one might get fussy due to hunger on the trip. Make sure you have some healthy and yummy snacks on hand!

4 – Pack efficiently

If you’re traveling alone with a toddler, or are not bringing that many items yourself, consider packing everything into one suitcase. Not only will it make carrying luggage easier, but it will remove one more thing to focus on while you’re also helping your child.

5 – Patience is key

Things won’t always go to plan while traveling, and that is especially true when traveling with a toddler who may not have traveled before! Be patient with them as they get accustomed to new people, places and things. This is a lovely opportunity to teach them about the sights they are seeing, and maybe even  learn new things together.
