A Splendiferous Dr Seuss Day!
Oh, The Fun You Can Have!
A school year is a long time, and takes a lot of work! By March, you might be feeling like you and your little one both need some new preschool activities to help shake up your everyday learning routine. Sometimes it’s tough to balance having fun with keeping it educational; but fortunately, with March arrives the perfect combination of the two with everyone’s favorite silly and wise author: Dr. Seuss! Well-known as the author of 60(!) children’s books, Theodore Geisel, who operated under the pen name Dr. Seuss, has been beloved by educators, parents, and little ones alike for many, many years. Dr. Seuss’ birthday is also important because it kicks off the month of March, which is National Reading Month. It’s the perfect day to grab one of those great preschool books and read ’til you can’t read any more. From Fox In Sox, The Lorax, Green Eggs and Ham and How The Grinch Stole Christmas, there are so many stories to choose from that will teach your little ones important lessons, all while having the most fun doing it!
If you and your little one homeschool, it’s the perfect opportunity to infuse your curriculum with preschool activities related to the colorful world of Seuss! There are already a number of fun games created with the books of Dr. Seuss in mind, but there’s also plenty of room for you to get creative and make up games of your own– think of the possibilities that One Fish Two Fish Red Fish Blue Fish could inspire. You can also adapt lesson plans based on the tales from these preschool books. Does your little one love The Lorax? Maybe try a lesson with an environmental plan!
There are many other amazing preschool activities that you and your little one can incorporate into your day to celebrate Dr. Seuss in a learning way! Here are some other fun ideas you can add into your curriculum based on your little one’s favorite book:
- Dr. Seuss’ ABC Book: This book is perfect if you and your little one are studying a language other than English! A fun activity you can try is creating your own ABC book using the letters of the language you are both learning. You can create picture illustrations to go along with all of the letters, too!
- The Cat in the Hat: This one is a crowd favorite, and it’s no surprise why. We all know and love our favorite striped-hat-wearing feline, but what about the other cats of the world? You and your little one can explore the cats, big and small, that live in the world, and discover some clever fun facts about them–or even pick another favorite feline!
- Dr Seuss’ Sleep Book: We all love to sleep, and Dr. Seuss’ Sleep Book is a great book to theme your day around. You can make a “pajama day” for your little one where they get to wear their PJs to class. To take it a step further, you can also talk with your little one about how important sleep is for our bodies, and teach them some healthy rest habits!
- Horton Hears a Who: Everyone loves Horton! Horton Hears a Who is also an amazing way for you to incorporate some STEM-related content into your lessons or activities for the day. Study the importance of sound, and provide your little one with lots of options for sensory exploration, such as crinkly tissue paper.
- Seuss Party: No birthday celebration is complete without a party! Throwing a party is a great way for you and your little one to enjoy a fun break from studying, and can actually be a really great way for your little one to take on some age-appropriate responsibilities. Have your little one come up with a snack menu, help design decorations, and plan some fun party games! They’ll enjoy the party and feel accomplished at the same time.
Even though Dr. Seuss’ birthday is March 2nd, there are no limits on the amount of learning you can do all year long! All of these activities are wonderful to implement year-round, and those preschool books are always available to flip through; your little one will have a fun time, no matter what time of year it is.
