How to Enjoy Recess During Online Preschool- Part 2 – Edutainment
As we mentioned in the first article of this series, recess is a very important part of your little one’s online preschool schedule! It gives them a bit of a break while also allowing them to participate in preschool activities that burn off some of the energy they’ve built up by sitting still for so long.
In this article, we will focus on more ‘edutainment’ preschool activities: things you can do which are fun but also have a learning purpose. Present them properly, and your child won’t even notice that they’re still learning things!
1 – Make a Snack Together
Snacks are important for little ones to keep their energy up for a full online preschool session. Because it is so necessary for them, why not involve them in the process? This is a great way to start introducing them to the basics of cooking and food prep. Talk to them about different forms of nutrition, such as fruits, vegetables, and carbs that they might like to enjoy during this period. You can also give them tasks based on their level of motor development. For example, maybe they’re too young to help you slice cheese for cheese-and-crackers, but they can assemble the final product! Involving your little one in making their own snack will not only provide a sense of accomplishment, but also a fun way to learn about nutrition and cooking.
2 – Create a Sensory Bin
A sensory bin is a box filled with a variety of items chosen simply because they’ll be interesting to interact with in a tactile way. Dry rice, pinecones, small blocks, and shaving cream are all creative and engaging items to include in this preschool activity! Helping your child explore their environment and teaching them the words for the things they’re feeling is a great way to expand their minds and vocabulary, while also making them aware of their sense of touch and sight.
3 – Workouts
There are plenty of child-friendly workout routines online, most of which are typically only 5-10 minutes. This lets them burn off energy in a more structured way, which will help them with their physical development and gross motor skills.
If your little one wants a form of exercise that’s a little more gentle and quiet, consider introducing them to yoga or tai chi as a more calm form of physical education.
4 – Bike Rides
If it’s practical in your neighborhood and the weather cooperates, bike rides are a wonderful preschool activity for your little one and you to share! Not only does it get you both out of the house, but it also provides a great opportunity for sightseeing. Little ones can be encouraged to make observations about their environment as they ride around, and can ask questions to learn more about what they are seeing.
