Learn and Play This Summer!

We’ve blinked, and May is over already — can you believe it? This school year has gone by so quickly, and summer is right around the corner. Summer can be an amazing time for you and your little one to take a break from a long year of learning! It can also be the perfect opportunity for you to help your little one with any learning gaps you might have noticed throughout the regular school year, whether your little one participates in online school or in-person education! Online summer school is a fantastic supplement to all types of learning, and is flexible enough to easily fit into your summer plans, no matter your location!

Some families might feel a bit reluctant or unsure at first about choosing online summer school for their little one. We totally understand — you and your little one have finished up a long school year, and you both need time to rest. One of the benefits of choosing online summer school is that flexibility. Many online lessons are asynchronous, and therefore easy to fit into your summer agenda, whether it includes travel, day trips or just time off in general!

Now that you’ve decided to take the leap into trying online summer school, what are some other benefits you can look forward to seeing? Well, to begin with, it’s easier over the summer to identify and supplement specific learning gaps you may have noticed during the school year. When your little one is in the middle of the academic year, it can be tough to add on too much more material; they can get overwhelmed, which actually might end up hurting rather than helping their progress! More likely than not, you’ve been given (or made yourself)  a list of areas where your little one might need a gentle push of help. You can use this as your guidebook for deciding what subjects or online classes you can have your little one review!

By choosing online summer school, you can also help prevent what is often referred to as the “summer slide”. While learning gaps are generally things that you might notice during the academic year that your little one has a tough time absorbing, the summer slide is a term we use to describe what happens when no learning occurs over the summer. Many studies show that if no learning occurs over the summer, little ones tend to lose some of those skills that they gained over the course of the school year. While this existed prior to the Covid-19 pandemic, it has gotten worse over the past few years, and on average students are falling behind much more than they have in the past. So, online summer learning is a great way to prevent this slide from occurring!

Finally, getting ahead on some learning goals for the following school year can only help young students! Making sure your little one is prepared for the year ahead of them will help them achieve all of the academic goals that are set for them in the following school year. Every single child has different needs, and sometimes getting a head start will make sure that they’re not being rushed into an academic year or trying to meet unrealistic goals! You don’t have to fill up their sunny summer days with classes galore; take it at whatever pace suits your little one best, and watch them soar.

It’s amazing to take breaks from hard work, and this summer is no exception! By adding classes alongside all of your fun summer plans, your little one can play and relax to their heart’s content while keeping that educational foundation nice and strong for the upcoming school year.
